Alevromountzouromata – The flour smudges of Carnival Monday
The city takes on a new colour on Carnival Monday and not by chance, since on that day it is “painted” with many colours – with as many as they choose to colour the flour that is thrown in huge quantities by those who participate in the local custom, the aleuromutzouromata. With roots from Byzantium or Sicily, the custom has been going strong for the last two centuries, turning Galaxidi into the most colourful “war zone” for one day.
